{"id":396,"date":"2024-06-27T02:58:12","date_gmt":"2024-06-27T02:58:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/homesinlincolnnebraska.com\/?p=396"},"modified":"2024-07-04T13:49:55","modified_gmt":"2024-07-04T13:49:55","slug":"harvard-task-forces-find-both-jewish-and-muslim-students-faced-discrimination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/homesinlincolnnebraska.com\/index.php\/2024\/06\/27\/harvard-task-forces-find-both-jewish-and-muslim-students-faced-discrimination\/","title":{"rendered":"Harvard task forces find both Jewish and Muslim students faced discrimination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Harvard University task <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/June-2024-preliminary-recommendations-AMAAB.pdf\">forces<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvard.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/June-2024-preliminary-recommendations-AS.pdf\">aimed<\/a> at tackling antisemitism and anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bias released preliminary recommendations Wednesday, finding discrimination faced by both Muslim and Jewish students.<\/p>\n<p>The Presidential Task Force on Combating Anti-Muslim and Anti-Arab Bias and the Presidential Task Force on Combating Antisemitism both found Jewish and Muslim members of the Harvard community saying they have gone through \u201ca state of uncertainty, abandonment, threat, and isolation, and a pervasive climate of intolerance\u201d and faced \u201cshunning, harassment, and intimidation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople of color from other groups and identities \u2014 often Black and South Asian students \u2013 shared experiences of racism and hatred because they were allies, or because they were misidentified as Arab, Muslim, or Palestinian,\u201d the task force on anti-Muslim and anti-Arab bias\u2019 preliminary recommendations read.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMuslim women who wear hijab and pro-Palestinian students wearing keffiyehs spoke about facing verbal harassment, being called \u2018terrorists,\u2019 and even being spat upon,\u201d the recommendations continued.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the recommendations by the task force on antisemitism said that Israeli students have faced \u201cdire\u201d conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have frequently been subject to derision and social exclusion,\u201d the recommendations read. \u201cDiscrimination, bullying, or harassment based on an individual\u2019s Israeli nationality is a gross violation of University policy and, beginning immediately, must be both publicly condemned and subject to substantive disciplinary action.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tensions between pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel factions on American college campuses erupted amid the current war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Pro-Palestinian protestors on campuses faced accusations of antisemitism, which they pushed back on.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work ahead of us will require concerted effort.
